CTK December Newsletter

4 Dec
Dear Parents and Karateka,

Term Dates:
The last classes to be taught this term will be on Monday 10th December.
Classes will start again on Tuesday 8th January.
Please note that classes in Kew Green and Ravenscourt Park run in accordance with the school club calendar and not the above dates.
Full term dates can be found on our website:

Colour Belt Gradings:
There is one more colour belt grading this term:
Wednesday 12th December
St. Luke’s House, 270 Sandycombe Road, Kew, TW9 3NP
5:00-6:00pm – All Grades
If you have received a grading invoice envelope or an email to confirm selection then you are welcome to attend this grading. Please email me to confirm your attendance if you have not done so already as spaces are limited.
There will also be a grading on Sunday 27th January at 10:00am in Mortlake. Full details will soon be confirmed.
Some of our younger members and beginners have been doing their gradings within the class so this does not apply to you as you are not expected to come to a separate grading session.
There are lots of children that are very nearly ready to do a grading and I am aware that it has been a long time since the majority of our students did their last grading. Please let me assure you that lots of progress is being made and that if they keep on working hard their opportunity to promote to the next belt will certainly come. It is also worth noting that once their next belt is achieved it should not take such a long time for the following belt because most of the hard work will have already been done.

BKA Licence Books and renewal slips:
The red licence books and renewal slips have finally arrived so all new licences will be given out in the classes this week. Please be assured that if your licence was due to be renewed on 1st November then your licence has been renewed and you do have a valid licence despite not having your renewal slip yet.

Outstanding Fees:
I will be sending emails and/or giving invoice envelopes for any outstanding fees. If you can make an online transfer then please put your child’s full name as the reference and use the following account details:
B T PETHICK
20-27-48
20821012

Equipment Last Call:
I sent an email last week with the price list for equipment (expertly modelled by my daughter Kara). I still have stock of hoodies, t-shirts, re-breakable boards, sparring kits and suits so if you would like to order anything before the end of term then please email me asap.
Happy Christmas!
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the festive period. I am sure that we all deserve a break and a chance to enjoy some family time 🙂
Yours sincerely,
Sensei Ben Pethick

Autumn Term Newsletter

22 Sep

Dear Parents and Karateka,

I hope you are all enjoying your summer holiday!

Welcome to the new look newsletter. Please note that this is a no-reply email so if you would like to contact me then please compose an email to my email addressben@crouchingtigerkarate.co.uk

Sensei Tom and I will be travelling to Japan from 29th August – 8th September so I may not reply any emails until after then. We will be doing lots of training in different dojos and of course we will be hoping to use the experience to enhance the material and method of our teaching when we return. We will try to post updates of our trip on the CTK Facebook page. You can use the link at the bottom of this email to see the Facebook page.

All classes will resume on Monday 10th September. There is a list of all the term dates for this academic year on our website:https://crouchingtigerkarate.wordpress.com/term-dates/

If I have not already contacted you about changing class times then please assume that the class times from last term will be unchanged this year.

Online Transfers:
I would like to encourage parents to pay the Karate fees by online transfer. This method saves time and paper, and also ensures that no payments get lost and can easily be tracked.

The term fees will remain the same as last year. The amount per student per term is as follows:
30 minute class = £90
45 minute class = £100
60 minute class = £110
Students who train twice a week have the second class half price:
2 x 60 minute classes = £165
2 x 45 minute classes = £150
1 x 60 minute class and one 45 minute class = £160

We try to keep our prices to a minimum so unfortunately we can not offer any sibling discounts.

If you would prefer to pay by cash or cheque then that is still fine. I will make the usual envelope invoices for all the people who have not paid before term starts on 10th September.

Please remember that we ask for half a term’s notice before leaving our classes. If you are receiving this newsletter and you are not planning to join our classes this term then please email me asap so that I can offer your space to someone else and take you off our system.

Adult Training:
Our adult Karate class is held on Monday evenings in St. Margaret’s. There is a small group of dedicated parents and more are welcome. We teach a holistic self-defence system with its core in the Karate katas. No experience is necessary and you are welcome to come and have a free trial before committing to the classes. Please email me if you are keen to come and give the class a try.

If kickboxing appeals more to you then Sensei Tom is also running a new kickboxing class on Saturdays in Mortlake from 3:15-4:15pm for teenagers and adults. These classes will be run in a less traditional way (no karate suits or katas), and will be a great way to improve fitness and power.
For more information then please feel free to email him on his new CTK email address: tom@crouchingtigerkarate.co.uk

Tora Karate Friendly Tournament:
The rescheduled date for our friendly tournament with Tora Karate club in Twickenham is Sunday 18th November. Please put that date into your diary if you are keen to take part in this competition and I will be sending out the full details to you soon.

Syllabus and Recommended Links:
Please click here for the CTK Colour Belt Syllabus
Please click here for the CTK Shodan Black Belt Syllabus
2nd Dan and 3rd Dan syllabus can be emailed to you by request.
Last term there were fewer promotions than usual; this is normal as we were implementing the changes in our new syllabus. A lot of the ground work has now been done so I would like to advise students who have not received a promotion in a while to set a target and practice for it. We will be doing our very best to help you, but if you only do one class per week then it is important to supplement this with extra practice at home. It would be a good idea to print out the syllabus and use it so that your practice can be targeted towards what will be asked of you in the grading. If you have forgotten moves in your katas then have a look at the youtube links to jog your memory.
Please click here for a list of recommended Youtube Links

Finally, congratulations to all students who passed their grading at the end of last term. In particular I would like to congratulate Sensei Tom Leask, Senpai Benjamin Larvin, Rory Wall and Justin Grant for passing Dan grade (Black Belt) promotions. I will be awarding the new Kyu grades (colour belts) in the first lesson this term.

Yours sincerely,

Sensei Ben Pethick

Inter-Dojo Cup

4 Apr

IMG_5957.JPG

We recently had our third annual Inter-Dojo Cup. With 6 gold medals each the cup was shared by the St. Margaret’s and Kew Dojos. There were 67 competitors and it was a very competitive but friendly atmosphere across all the age categories. We were really impressed with the high standard throughout!

Elkai Gold and Bronze

29 Sep

On Sunday 17th September Benjamin Larvin and Joseph Larvin entered the Elkai National Championships. There is always very tough opposition in this tournament with national level competitors competing in the WKF (Olympic) system. Joseph won Gold in kumite (sparring) and Benjamin won Bronze in kumite as well. This is a fantastic achievement in such a competitive field and we are all very proud of them.

Welcome Back

11 Sep

Dear Parents and Karateka,

I hope you all had a great summer holiday and we are very exited about resuming our classes!

Autumn Term will start on Monday 11th September. All classes will resume at the same times as last term from this date.

Term Dates:

Start Date – 11th September

Half Term – 23rd-30th October

Term Ends – 11th December

Please note that there are no classes at Orleans on Monday 30th October as the school has an inset day.

New Prices:

It has been a very difficult decision to make as I want to continue to keep the prices to a minimum, but it has become necessary to increase some of our fees. It has been 6 years since the price of our term fees have changed and last year I mentioned that our costs have gone up to such a level that it will become necessary to increase our prices.

30 minute sessions will remain at £90 per term.

45 minute sessions will now cost £100 per term.

1 hour sessions will now cost £110 per term.

If you train twice a week the second session will remain at a 50% discount.

Grading fees will remain at £25

Licence renewal fees will now cost £25

I hope that you will still find our classes great value and we will be doubling our efforts to provide quality tuition and a professional service.

Class Times:

Class times will remain the same as last year and unless I get in touch with you individually this week then please just assume that your child’s class time will be the same as last term. If you can no longer make the class time and wish to change sessions then please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your request.

Notice:

If you are receiving this email and you are not planning to attend classes this term, whether you have given notice or not, could you please let me know asap so that I can offer your space to someone on a waiting list.

I will be in touch again soon with news of upcoming gradings, tournaments and courses.

Looking forward to seeing you all at your dojo next week!

Yours sincerely,

Sensei Ben Pethick

June Newsletter

22 Jun

Dear Parents and Karate,

I would like to thank all the children that took part in the Kew Fair Demonstration last Saturday. Despite the intense heat there was a fantastic energy from the group and we all enjoyed the water fight at the end 🙂
Please read below for information on upcoming tournaments, gradings, holiday clubs, holiday classes and demonstrations. The tournament only applies to children over 9 years old and the gradings are only for those who do not have gradings within their classes so please skip those bits if they do not apply to your child.

Tora Karate Friendship Tournament:
We have arranged a tournament with our friends from Tora Karate Academy in Twickenham on Sunday 9th July starting at 9:00am in St. Mary’s University in Twickenham.
This will be a good chance to gain tournament experience with another club but in a more informal and celebratory atmosphere than a public tournament.
The full details are included in the attached registration form. Their youngest members are around 9 years old so this will only be open to 9 year olds and over of all grades (including adults).
Spaces to this tournament are limited as we want to match the entry numbers from their club. If you would like to enter then please note that you only have this week to either let me know by email or fill in and return your registration form. Deadline for entries will be Sunday 25th June and all forms must be completed, signed and returned by Sunday 2nd July.
Spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis but we will give priority to those who attend the tournament preparation class or those who have attended previous tournament classes.
Gradings:
There are two Gradings scheduled for the weekend of 1st /2nd July. If your child has been selected and you intend to come to one of these gradings then please let me know in advance which one you are planning to come to.
Saturday 1st July – 3:30-4:30pm – Duke’s Meadow Community Hall (Alexandra Gardens, W4 2RX)
This Grading is for all grades.
Sunday 2nd July – The Old Powerstation, 121A Mortlake High Street, SW14 8SN
9:00-10:00am – White Belt-Green Belt (White, Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue and Green Belts)
10:00-11:00am – Green Stripe and Above
The belt colours refer to the belts that they have now rather than the ones they intend to achieve.
Tournament Preparation Class:
There will be a 90 minute tournament preparation class in The Old Powerstation in Mortlake on Sunday 2nd July from 11:00-12:30pm.
The first half will concentrate on Kata and the second half will concentrate on sparring .The cost of this class will be £10 and we would highly recommend it to anyone who plans to attend the Tora Karate tournament.
Holiday Clubs
Venue: Duke’s Meadow Community Hall (Alexandra Gardens, W4 2RX)
Date: Tuesday 25th July and Wednesday 26th July
Time: 10:00am-2:00pm
Cost: £30 for one day or £50 for both days
We will be running our usual 4 hour intensive training camp in the Duke’s Meadow Community Hall venue. All students above 6 years old are welcome. Please email me if you would like to book a space at these clubs.
Holiday Classes:
Sensei Tom will be running a 90 minute class in Kew throughout August every Wednesday afternoon for those who are around over the summer and wish to continue training.
Venue: St. Luke’s House, 270 Sandycombe Rd. Kew. TW9 3NP
Dates: 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th August and 6th September
Time: 4:30-6:00pm.
Cost: £10 per class or £25 for 3 classes or £45 for all 6 classes
It is fine to just turn up on the day but it would help if you let us know in advance so that we have an idea of the numbers.
St. Margaret’s Fair:
We will be doing a demonstration at the St. Margaret’s Fair on Moor Mead (TW1) 4:10pm on Saturday 8th July.
All students regardless of age of experience are welcome and if you would like to come then please meet by the performance area (usually in the middle of the field) at 4:00pm.
Term Dates:
Last Classes of Summer Term: Wednesday 12th July
Autumn Term Start Date: Monday 11th September
The Thursday morning East Sheen class will run on Thursday 13th July to make up for the class missed on the election
Term dates at Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Preparatory Schools have different term dates to those listed above.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I usually only manage to do my emails on two or three days a week so I apologies if I do not get back to you straight away.

Yours sincerely,
Sensei Ben Pethick
