Flyer 2019.jpg

We are pleased to announce that Sensei Tom will be opening a new Karate club on a Tuesday afternoon from 5:45-6:45pm in the Mortlake Hall (not the Powerstation but a different venue in Mortlake). All the details are on the attached flyer.

If you are thinking of doing more than one class a week or if you have friends who might be interested please pass on the flyer. Adults are welcome too.

To begin with it is one class for all ages and abilities and as it grows Sensei Tom will be splitting the ages and experience levels.

Please remember that if you choose to do more than one class a week then the second class is half-price.

CTK Autumn Term Newsletter

3 Sep
Dear Parents and Karateka,

I hope that you are all enjoying your well-deserved summer holiday! I have included information below on the remaining holiday classes, term dates, new club badge, Autumn Term fees, private classes and options for adult training.

If I have not contacted you about changing class times then please assume that class times from last term will remain unchanged this year. If you would like to change class times then please email me. I will be away from 26th August until 2nd September so I apologise if I am slow with my response.

Holiday Classes:
Our holiday classes will resume on Wednesday afternoons in Kew from tomorrow. They are a great way to refresh their karate skills so that they are not too rusty when term stats again.

All classes will take place in St. Luke’s House, 270 Sandycombe Road, TW9 3NP

All classes will be from 4:30-6:00pm.

The cost of the classes are £12.50 per class, or £10 if you come to 3 or more.

The classes will take place on the following dates:
21st August
28th August
4th September

It is fine to just turn up on the day, but if possible please let me know in advance if you are planning to come so that I can arrange for extra instructors if the numbers are enough.

Term Dates:
All classes will resume from Monday 9th September.
Not all schools have half term on the same week.  We usually follow the state-school half term week but this term different boroughs have different weeks for half term.
Please click here to see the term dates for each venue or school
Some clubs will have a two week half term but if this is the case then we will make up the classes at the end of term and all classes will have 12 weeks of classes scheduled.
You can also find our term dates on our website: https://crouchingtigerkarate.wordpress.com/term-dates/

New Club Badge:
We have redesigned our club badge. I hope you like the new simple but dynamic design! The badge is larger than our previous badge and it has iron-on material at the back which should make life easier for everyone 🙂
I would like to encourage all students to wear our club badge as it gives our club a visual identity and gives our students a sense of belonging.
The cost of the badge is £5. If you would like to buy one please add it onto your term fees and I will hand it to the children on the first week of term.

Autumn Term Payments:
The Autumn Term Fees are now due and they can be transferred at your convenience before the start of term.
The online transfer details are the same as previous terms. Please use your child’s full name as the reference. The account details are as follows

B T PETHICK
20-27-48
20821012

The term fees have again been frozen and will remain the same as last year. The amount per student per term is as follows:
30 minute class = £90 (£95 with a club badge)
45 minute class = £100 (£105 with a club badge)
60 minute class = £110 (£115 with a club badge)
Students who train twice a week have the second class half price:
2 x 60 minute classes = £165 (£170 with a club badge)
2 x 45 minute classes = £150 (£155 with a club badge)
1 x 60 minute class and one 45 minute class = £160 (£165 with a club badge)

If you would prefer to pay by cash or cheque then that is still fine. I will make the usual envelope invoices for all the people who have not paid before term starts on 9th September.

Please remember that we ask for half a term’s notice before leaving our classes. If you are receiving this newsletter and you are not planning to join our classes this term then please email me asap so that I can offer your space to someone else and take you off our system.

Private Classes:
Sensei Tom is available to teach private classes which would give a fantastically productive session for your child. If they are looking to work towards a brown or black belt grading in the coming term it would be a really great way to get back into training before the term starts or for anyone wanting to gain confidence and become comfortable with their syllabus.
He charges £40 per hour
The weather looks good for the next couple of weeks so if you arrange a private class in your garden or local park then there is no extra hall hire cost.
If you would like to make a booking then please contact Sensei Tom directly:
tom@courchingtigerkarate.co.uk
07912620301

Adult Training:
Our adult Karate class is held on Monday evenings in St. Margaret’s from 8-9pm. There is a small group of dedicated parents and more are welcome. We teach a holistic self-defence system with its core in the Karate katas. No experience is necessary and you are welcome to come and have a free trial before committing to the classes. Please email me if you are keen to come and give the class a try.

If kickboxing appeals more to you then Sensei Tom runs kickboxing class on Saturdays in Mortlake from 3:15-4:15pm for teenagers and adults. These classes will be run in a less traditional way (no karate suits or katas), and will be a great way to improve fitness and power.
For more information then please feel free to email him directly: tom@crouchingtigerkarate.co.uk

I will be in touch again in September with advance notice for dates of tournaments, gradings and any extra sessions that we are running.

Yours sincerely,

Sensei Ben Pethick

If your child has been selected for a grading then please let me know which grading you are planning to attend. If you are unsure whether your child has been selected for a grading please email me and I will clarify.

All grades below orange belt will be assessed within the lessons so you will not need to come to an external grading for the earlier grades.

Summer Fair Demonstrations:
We will be continuing our tradition of performing demonstrations at the Kew and St. Margaret’s Fairs this summer. All students are very welcome to come and take part and I hope to see a good mix of ages and experience levels at these demonstrations.

CTK December Newsletter

4 Dec
Dear Parents and Karateka,

Term Dates:
The last classes to be taught this term will be on Monday 10th December.
Classes will start again on Tuesday 8th January.
Please note that classes in Kew Green and Ravenscourt Park run in accordance with the school club calendar and not the above dates.
Full term dates can be found on our website:

Colour Belt Gradings:
There is one more colour belt grading this term:
Wednesday 12th December
St. Luke’s House, 270 Sandycombe Road, Kew, TW9 3NP
5:00-6:00pm – All Grades
If you have received a grading invoice envelope or an email to confirm selection then you are welcome to attend this grading. Please email me to confirm your attendance if you have not done so already as spaces are limited.
There will also be a grading on Sunday 27th January at 10:00am in Mortlake. Full details will soon be confirmed.
Some of our younger members and beginners have been doing their gradings within the class so this does not apply to you as you are not expected to come to a separate grading session.
There are lots of children that are very nearly ready to do a grading and I am aware that it has been a long time since the majority of our students did their last grading. Please let me assure you that lots of progress is being made and that if they keep on working hard their opportunity to promote to the next belt will certainly come. It is also worth noting that once their next belt is achieved it should not take such a long time for the following belt because most of the hard work will have already been done.

BKA Licence Books and renewal slips:
The red licence books and renewal slips have finally arrived so all new licences will be given out in the classes this week. Please be assured that if your licence was due to be renewed on 1st November then your licence has been renewed and you do have a valid licence despite not having your renewal slip yet.

Outstanding Fees:
I will be sending emails and/or giving invoice envelopes for any outstanding fees. If you can make an online transfer then please put your child’s full name as the reference and use the following account details:
B T PETHICK
20-27-48
20821012

Equipment Last Call:
I sent an email last week with the price list for equipment (expertly modelled by my daughter Kara). I still have stock of hoodies, t-shirts, re-breakable boards, sparring kits and suits so if you would like to order anything before the end of term then please email me asap.
Happy Christmas!
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the festive period. I am sure that we all deserve a break and a chance to enjoy some family time 🙂
Yours sincerely,
Sensei Ben Pethick

Autumn Term Newsletter

22 Sep

Dear Parents and Karateka,

I hope you are all enjoying your summer holiday!

Welcome to the new look newsletter. Please note that this is a no-reply email so if you would like to contact me then please compose an email to my email addressben@crouchingtigerkarate.co.uk

Sensei Tom and I will be travelling to Japan from 29th August – 8th September so I may not reply any emails until after then. We will be doing lots of training in different dojos and of course we will be hoping to use the experience to enhance the material and method of our teaching when we return. We will try to post updates of our trip on the CTK Facebook page. You can use the link at the bottom of this email to see the Facebook page.

All classes will resume on Monday 10th September. There is a list of all the term dates for this academic year on our website:https://crouchingtigerkarate.wordpress.com/term-dates/

If I have not already contacted you about changing class times then please assume that the class times from last term will be unchanged this year.

Online Transfers:
I would like to encourage parents to pay the Karate fees by online transfer. This method saves time and paper, and also ensures that no payments get lost and can easily be tracked.

The term fees will remain the same as last year. The amount per student per term is as follows:
30 minute class = £90
45 minute class = £100
60 minute class = £110
Students who train twice a week have the second class half price:
2 x 60 minute classes = £165
2 x 45 minute classes = £150
1 x 60 minute class and one 45 minute class = £160

We try to keep our prices to a minimum so unfortunately we can not offer any sibling discounts.

If you would prefer to pay by cash or cheque then that is still fine. I will make the usual envelope invoices for all the people who have not paid before term starts on 10th September.

Please remember that we ask for half a term’s notice before leaving our classes. If you are receiving this newsletter and you are not planning to join our classes this term then please email me asap so that I can offer your space to someone else and take you off our system.

Adult Training:
Our adult Karate class is held on Monday evenings in St. Margaret’s. There is a small group of dedicated parents and more are welcome. We teach a holistic self-defence system with its core in the Karate katas. No experience is necessary and you are welcome to come and have a free trial before committing to the classes. Please email me if you are keen to come and give the class a try.

If kickboxing appeals more to you then Sensei Tom is also running a new kickboxing class on Saturdays in Mortlake from 3:15-4:15pm for teenagers and adults. These classes will be run in a less traditional way (no karate suits or katas), and will be a great way to improve fitness and power.
For more information then please feel free to email him on his new CTK email address: tom@crouchingtigerkarate.co.uk

Tora Karate Friendly Tournament:
The rescheduled date for our friendly tournament with Tora Karate club in Twickenham is Sunday 18th November. Please put that date into your diary if you are keen to take part in this competition and I will be sending out the full details to you soon.

Syllabus and Recommended Links:
Please click here for the CTK Colour Belt Syllabus
Please click here for the CTK Shodan Black Belt Syllabus
2nd Dan and 3rd Dan syllabus can be emailed to you by request.
Last term there were fewer promotions than usual; this is normal as we were implementing the changes in our new syllabus. A lot of the ground work has now been done so I would like to advise students who have not received a promotion in a while to set a target and practice for it. We will be doing our very best to help you, but if you only do one class per week then it is important to supplement this with extra practice at home. It would be a good idea to print out the syllabus and use it so that your practice can be targeted towards what will be asked of you in the grading. If you have forgotten moves in your katas then have a look at the youtube links to jog your memory.
Please click here for a list of recommended Youtube Links

Finally, congratulations to all students who passed their grading at the end of last term. In particular I would like to congratulate Sensei Tom Leask, Senpai Benjamin Larvin, Rory Wall and Justin Grant for passing Dan grade (Black Belt) promotions. I will be awarding the new Kyu grades (colour belts) in the first lesson this term.

Yours sincerely,

Sensei Ben Pethick
